Best Practices for Handling Bedridden Patients

When Movement Is Limited, Attention Must Be Unmatched

Caring for a bedridden patient goes beyond feeding and cleaning, it requires vigilance, empathy, and the knowledge to prevent serious health issues like pressure ulcers (bedsores). These painful wounds can develop quickly and complicate recovery.

Whether you’re a family caregiver or professional, Abba Health Services shares key practices to reduce discomfort and maintain dignity for bedridden patients.

1. Reposition Every 2 Hours, Even at Night

Bedsores form when skin and tissue are compressed for too long, especially on the back, hips, elbows, or heels.

Tip:

  • Set alarms or reminders to reposition the patient every 2 hours.

  • Use a schedule: back → left side → right side → back.

This promotes blood flow and reduces pressure on vulnerable areas.

2. Keep the Skin Clean and Dry

Moisture from sweat, urine, or spills can break down the skin barrier quickly.

Skin care musts:

  • Clean the skin daily and after every incontinence episode

  • Use mild soap and pat dry gently

  • Apply barrier creams to high-risk zones

3. Invest in a Pressure-Relief Mattress or Cushions

Not all mattresses are created equal for bedridden patients.

Consider:

  • Alternating air pressure mattresses

  • Memory foam overlays

  • Heel protectors or cushion pads

Our team can help you choose the right support equipment for long-term care.

4. Encourage Nutrition and Hydration

Poor nutrition weakens skin integrity, making it more prone to breakdown.

Include:

  • Protein-rich meals

  • Plenty of fluids

  • Vitamin C and Zinc supplements (with physician approval)

5. Provide Emotional Care and Stimulation

Being bedridden doesn’t mean the mind should be inactive. Loneliness and boredom can quickly turn into depression.

Try this:

  • Offer music therapy, spiritual support, or storytelling

  • Schedule video calls with family

  • Read aloud or play audiobooks
